New space opens in Murano dedicated to contemporary art dialoguing with glass

In Murano, the new Barovier&Toso ARTE gallery dedicated to contemporary artists who use glass as an artistic medium will open on Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. In fact, the project focuses on contemporary artworks made of glass, which thus becomes not only a craft material but a sophisticated and dynamic expressive tool. The gallery aims to create an interdisciplinary context that connects glass to other art forms such as painting, sculpture, drawing and textiles, breaking the traditional boundaries between art and design.

Flanked by Barovier&Toso, the world's oldest glassworks (in business since 1295 and now a leader in luxury design and lighting), the gallery represents a new dimension that expands the horizon of glass into the fine arts.

The opening will be celebrated with the inaugural exhibition Glass Art in Dialogue / Glass Art in Dialogue, on view from Feb. 13 to June 8, 2025, where the two artists Marija Jaensch and Amy Thai will explore glass and the rich Murano tradition for the first time. Both artists, already participants in the group exhibition H2O Venezia: Diari d'acqua / Water Diaries organized by the Barovier&Toso Foundation during the last Biennale Arte, will explore the relationship between contemporary innovation and the historical heritage of glass.

The gallery is located on the second floor of the prestigious Palazzo Barovier&Toso, a building constructed in 1920, overlooking the striking Rio dei Vetrai, the canal of the world's most famous glassworks and furnaces. The main exhibition venue, the Sala dell'Acqua, features a bright environment with a truss ceiling and four impressive chandeliers by Barovier&Toso that combine classical, modern and contemporary styles.

In addition to the exhibition space, the gallery includes a bar and cafeteria in delicate shades of pink, designed to host events, meetings and panel discussions.
