Angelika Kauffmann's Self-Portrait in the words of the director of the Tiroler Landesmuseen

Among the eighteenth-century masterpieces housed at the Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum in Innsbruck is theSelf-portrait of Angelika Kauffmann in traditional Bregenzerwald costume, a work from 1781.

Among the earliest members of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, Angelika Kauffmann (Chur, 1741 - Rome, 1807) was an extraordinary painter "at a time, the second half of the 18th century, when this profession was normally reserved for men," comments Tiroler Landesmuseen director Peter Assmann in a short video dedicated to her promoted by Austria Tourism. "On the one hand, the artist transformed the memory of the antique into an eighteenth-century world; on the other hand, she was a salon painter, portraying personalities from the artistic and political worlds. She thus had a great influence on society."

Assmann briefly recounts the life of this artist, whose Self-Portrait preserved in the city's main art museum is, in his opinion, fascinating because "although she frequented salons, she painted herself as a young girl village girl, in the typical costume of the region where she was born, very close to the Tyrol." She was able to paint with great refinement in detail: if you look at the bodice, for example, you will notice the fineness of the white contrasting with the green and red.
