Do you know how a violin is made? Visit the violin-making workshops of Cremona

Do you know how a violin is made and what woods are used to make it? You can find out in Cremonese violin-making workshops.

In 2012 Cremona received UNESCO recognition as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity: the history of Cremona cannot be separated from that of the violin makers' workshops that populate it, places where the violin was born more than 500 years ago.

Do you know how a violin is made and what woods are used to make it? And how much it takes to make one? You can find out in Cremonese violin-making workshops. In fact, by entering a workshop you can witness part of the process of making a stringed instrument and listen to the words of the master luthier. An experience suitable for everyone, young and old, enthusiasts and experts.

The birthplace of Antonio Stradivari, Cremona is famous for its violin making: this is for several reasons, including the concentration of violin makers' workshops and the very high value of the instruments preserved in the various collections in the city.

Cremona lives on this tradition, which has never faded away and has not yet lost its ancient charm. The violin makers who still populate the historic center of Cremona with their workshops are inspired in the construction of their instruments by the classical Cremonese method, a model tested and perfected by representatives of the three great families of master violin makers of the past: the Amati, the Guarneri and Antonio Stradivari. You too can visit a luthier's workshop and talk to a master luthier. Touch the wood, smell the scent of varnish, or discover the craftsmanship behind each gesture. The luthier will present the stages of construction: from choosing the wood to making the design and internal shape, to the actual construction of the instrument to the varnishing, assembly of accessories and final testing.

To arrange your workshop visit, call the Infopoint at + 39 0372 407081 or email info.turismo@comune.cremona.it. It will be a unique experience.
