Bernardo Strozzi's Portrait of Monteverdi narrated by the director of the Tiroler Landesmuseen
The director of the Tiroler Landesmuseen in Innsbruck, Peter Assmann, talks in a short video about the Portrait of Claudio Monteverdi made by Bernardo Strozzi and preserved in the Ferdinandeum.

The Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum is Innsbruck's most important art museum, inside which the entire history of Tyrol, from the Stone Age to the present day, is housed. Masterpieces of ancient art include works by such wide-ranging authors as Rembrandt, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Michael Pacher, Angelika Kauffmann, Bernardo Strozzi, and many others. By the latter is the portrait preserved here of composer Claudio Monteverdi, a very important painting because it testifies to the excellent painting of the Genoese artist, a leading figure in early 17th-century painting in Genoa. "It is a portrait that immediately strikes visitors," comments Tiroler Landesmuseen director Peter Assmann, "because his eyes follow you wherever you go in the museum hall. Everything focuses on his face and his hands, between which you notice a book."
Peter Assmann narrated, in collaboration with Austria Tourism, this picture in a short video of about two minutes, pointing out that Claudio Monteverdi was not only a composer, but also one of the greatest musicians of the late sixteenth century, active especially in the court of the Gonzaga family in Mantua. Here he was a real personality: a director of music who controlled and organized the court music, as well as church music, of the Ducal Palace in Mantua. Monteverdi had great success at the European level with his opera,Orfeo. It is fascinating, according to Assmann, this ability Monteverdi had to range from sacred to secular, court music, and his way of bringing different voices together.
