London's National Gallery lands in cinema with an event film for its 200th anniversary

On October 22 and 23, 2024, to mark the 200th anniversary of its founding, the National Gallery in London comes to the cinema with NATIONAL GALLERY 200, the new season of Great Art at the Movies.

To mark the bicentenary of the founding of the National Gallery in London, NATIONAL GALLERY 200, the first installment of the new season of Great Art at the Movies directed by Ali Ray and Phil Grabsky and dedicated to one of the world’s most important museums, will arrive in Italian cinemas on October 22 and 23, 2024.

The National Gallery was founded in 1824 by the U.K. government, which purchased 38 paintings from banker John Julius Angerstein, and expanded by its early directors, such as the celebrated Sir Charles Lock Eastlake. NATIONAL GALLERY 200 shows how the power of art lies in its ability to communicate with anyone and gives voice to those whose lives have been variously touched by the National Gallery: from security guard to director, from ordinary visitors to celebrities to members of the royal family. Claudia Winkleman, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam, Jacqueline Wilson, and Princess Eugenie will thus make known their personal connection to the National Gallery. Each interviewee will choose the artwork that is closest to his or her heart, and through the stories of the works analyzed, it will be possible to explore the National Gallery’s 200-year history and the future of the exhibition space.

Produced by Phil Grabsky with Exhibition on Screen, the film aims to demonstrate how art can communicate with anyone and how each visitor can enter into dialogue with individual works. The intent of the two filmmakers is to encourage the audience to observe paintings and sculptures with their own eyes by fostering a personal contact with the work. Great Art in Cinema is an original and exclusive project of Nexo Studios. For fall 2024, the season is distributed exclusively in Italy by Nexo Studios with media partners Radio Capital, Sky Arte, MYmovies.it and in collaboration with Abbonamento Musei.
