At GAM in Milan, a selection of photographic images from the Deutsche Bank Collection

From September 26 to October 27, 2019, GAM, Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Milano hosts Images of Italy, Contemporary photography from the Deutsche Bank Collection, the first exhibition in Italy to present a selection of photographic works from the Deutsche Bank Collection, one of the world’s leading corporate collections of contemporary art.

It is a journey through the images of Italy stopped by the lens of the most famous Italian and German artists that winds its way through GAM’s Ballroom, Room 29 and Parnassus Room. The exhibition includes photographs taken from the 1950s to the present day by Luigi Ghirri, Gabriele Basilico, Vincenzo Castella, Armin Linke, Candida Höfer and Heidi Specker, to name a few.

The photographers approach Italian history and culture in very different ways, either dedicating their works to mass tourism and the legacy of the modern or reflecting in their images the classical beauty of architecture and landscape. In addition to the formal experiment, the focus is always on an aesthetic or social vision of the country.

This exhibition combines GAM’s interest in the contemporary with that of Deutsche Bank, which has collected works from the different countries in which it operates globally since the late 1970s. Since the collection’s inception, contemporary photography has occupied a prominent role; today, the works of Images of Italy are on display in the Group’s three Italian offices: the Milan Bicocca headquarters, the Milan building on Via Turati and the Piazza SS. Apostoli headquarters in Rome.

Images of Italy, Contemporary photography from the Deutsche Bank Collection is organized and curated by Deutsche Bank and Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Milano and has the patronage of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Milan, and the Goethe-Institut Mailand.
