Cardi Gallery in Milan presents the solo exhibition of South Korean artist Ha Chong-Hyun

Cardi Gallery in Milan is hosting a solo exhibition of Ha Chong-Hyun, one of South Korea's most highly regarded artists, from September 18, 2019.

A solo exhibition by Ha Chong-Hyun, one of South Korea’s most highly regarded artists, will be on view at Cardi Gallery in Milan from September 18 to December 20, 2019. On this occasion, works from the Conjunction series, created between 1972 and 2019, will be presented to the public; some of these works were completed especially for the exhibition.

In the paintings that will be featured in the gallery, the classic palette of neutrals and blues used by Ha Chong-Hyun is enriched with other intense shades of blue, red, and black, the use of which stems from the artist’s commitment toexploring the characteristic colors of Korean interiors. In particular, vermilion red is a new element for the artist, as it has only been used since 2018.

Ha Chong-Hyun is an exponent of the Korean art movement Dansaekhwa; the artist has used unconventional materials throughout his practice, such as newsprint, scrap wood, and barbed wire applied to canvas. Working with muted earth tones on canvas and hemp surfaces and combining Eastern and Western painting traditions, as well as challenging the strict delineation between sculpture, painting and performance, Ha Chong-Hyun has helped redefine the language of painting. Beginning in 1974, Chong-Hyun began to use the canvas not only as a support: thus was born the Conjunction series, which is based on the philosophy that the purity of the medium of painting and the physicality of the artist merge, or are conjoined, in the act of painting.
