For the first time, Villa Freya, a historic residence in Asolo, is opening its doors to an exhibition. From September 26, 2026, to January 24, 2027, the villa will host “Klimt at Villa Freya: Beauty and Nature in Art Prints,” the first exhibition organized at the villa and the first event dedicated to Gustav Klimt in the city of Asolo.
The exhibition will present one of the most important collections of graphic works dedicated to the master of the Vienna Secession, comprising approximately seventy works from private collections. The exhibition brings together rare collotypes—art prints created using a historic printing technique—alongside drawings, some of which will be on public display for the first time. Rounding out the exhibition will be rare issues of *Ver Sacrum*, the famous magazine that accompanied and disseminated the ideas of the Vienna Secession.
Curated by Elena Ledda, the exhibition aims to transform Villa Freya into a space where art and landscape meet, creating a dialogue between Klimt’s creative universe and the figure of Freya Stark, the British traveler and writer who lived in the villa gifted to her by her friend Herbert Young. Deeply connected to the themes of travel, nature, and discovery, Stark represents an ideal counterpart with whom the Austrian artist’s work seems to share a natural affinity.
The exhibition offers a broad overview of Klimt’s body of work, focusing on two central themes of his artistic exploration: nature and beauty. On the one hand, landscapes and plant elements; on the other, the female figures that have made his imagery famous.
The exhibition also marks a new milestone in the Carron family’s efforts to promote Villa Freya. Owners of the estate since 2006, the family has carried out major restoration and renovation projects, making both the botanical garden andthe archaeological site —which preserves the remains of a Roman theater dating back to the 2nd century A.D.—accessible to the public. Conceived by Monica Masin and Diego Carron, the initiative aims to offer an experience different from that of traditional museum spaces. Klimt’s works will, in fact, be displayed in an intimate, domestic setting, where art, architecture, history, and landscape intertwine in a continuous dialogue. “We chose Gustav Klimt for the innovative power of his art and for the profound sense of freedom that his figure continues to express—an aspect we feel is also close to the spirit of Freya Stark,” said Monica Masin Carron. “With this exhibition, the public—who already appreciate the enchantment of the Garden—will also be able to discover the charm of the rooms at Villa Freya, which are being opened to the public for the first time. We have designed an itinerary that goes beyond the traditional museum visit. An immersive, narrative experience that explores fascinating themes such as beauty and nature will guide visitors on a journey to discover a more intimate and lesser-known side of Klimt, in harmony with the atmosphere of the Villa and the wonderful landscape that surrounds it. Thanks also to the valuable dialogue we’ve established with local institutions and organizations—whom we’d like to thank in advance for their support— we hope that the exhibition will serve as an opportunity to introduce Villa Freya and Asolo to an ever-wider audience, attracting new visitors united by their interest in art and culture.”
The exhibition is organized by Villa Freya and Gruppo Carron, under the patronage of the Province of Treviso, the City of Asolo, the Municipality of San Zenone degli Ezzelini, Confindustria Veneto Est, and IPA Terre di Asolo e Monte Grappa, in partnership with Zurich Spadavecchia Venturi & Partners.
