From March 5 to July 19, 2026, the Genius Museum in Rome is dedicating a major retrospective to Robert Doisneau, among the most famous and beloved photographers of the 20th century. Born in Gentilly in 1912, Doisneau was one of the leading figures of French humanist photography. With his unmistakable black and white he was able to capture moments, street scenes and simple gestures. The Roman exhibition will offer a journey through images capable of recounting everyday life with irony, delicacy and deep human sensitivity.

The centerpiece of the exhibition will be the photographer’s most famous work, Le baiser de l’Hôtel de Ville (1950), but alongside this iconic shot will be equally significant images, such as Un chien à roulettes (1977), La concierge aux lunettes (1945) and L’information scolaire (1956). With more than 140 photographs, the exhibition will trace Doisneau’s entire career: from his beginnings in the 1930s to his full maturity. Street photographs, portraits, childhood games, Parisian glimpses and everyday instants compose a visual narrative rich in poetry.

The exhibition project is a collaboration between Arthemisia and the Ministry of Defense, together with Esercito Italiano and Difesa Servizi, an in-house company of the Ministry of Defense. Sponsored by the Embassy of France in Italy, the Lazio Region and the City of Rome, it is curated by Atelier Robert Doisneau and Gabriele Accornero, and is produced and organized by Arthemisia. Produced in collaboration with Bridgeconsultingpro, the project sees the partnership of Fondazione Terzo Pilastro Internazionale and Poema, with sponsorship from Generali Italia through the Generali Valore Cultura program; mobility partners Frecciarossa - Treno Ufficiale and Atac, and radio partner Dimensione Suono Soft.
