Milan celebrates Gabriele Basilico with two exhibitions, ten years after his death


Milan pays tribute to the great photographer Gabriele Basilico with two exhibitions, at the Triennale and the Palazzo Reale, ten years after his death.

From Oct. 13, 2023 to Jan. 7, 2024, Milan will present a tribute exhibition to Gabriele Basilico (Milan, 1944 - 2013) at the Triennale, curated by Giovanna Calvenzi and Matteo Balduzzi, promoted and produced by Comune di Milano-Culture and Palazzo Reale, together with Electa, and realized with the scientific collaboration of theGabriele Basilico Archive.

Awide selection of images of his city will be exhibited for the occasion: a series of works, including the account of the Milanese suburbs in the 1970s, the investigation dedicated to factories (1978-1980), the survey on the architecture of Milanese modernism (1985), the project on the city at night carried out for AEM (1989), and the works for the construction of the Porta Nuova district (from 2004 to 2012). Also on display will be a selection of works preserved at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Cinisello Balsamo.

Palazzo Reale will also celebrate the great photographer ten years after his death, with an exhibition curated by Giovanna Calvenzi and Filippo Maggia and realized with the scientific collaboration of the Basilico Archive. Basilico’s most important projects will be on display, from his early days to the many works dedicated to his city, including Milan. Portraits of factories, the many commissions he received, from DATAR Bord de mer to the four missions completed in Beirut, and then to Berlin, Istanbul, San Francisco on behalf of MoMA SF, Moscow, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro and others.
