Avant-garde art finds a home in the Milan subway. In the spring of 2027, the Museum of Avant-garde (MA-g) will open its permanent home inside the Marche station on the M5 line, transforminga currently unused area into a new cultural space open to the public. The project was conceived with the goal of studying, preserving, and promoting the artistic movements that revolutionized the visual language of the 20th century, connecting their experiences with contemporary research. The museum’s mission is to explore the spirit of the historical avant-garde movements and highlight their legacy, bringing the relationship between art and society back to the forefront.
The decision to locate MA-g—a cultural institution dedicated to the study, preservation, and promotion of the historical avant-garde movements that transformed the visual language of the 20th century— in a subway station, outside the traditional cultural circuit of the city center, reflects precisely the principles of the avant-garde movements, which were also founded with the intent of reconnecting art to everyday life. The new museum thus aims to reach a broad and diverse audience while, at the same time, restoring a cultural function to a portion of public space that is currently unused.
MA-g is managed by the Museum of Avant-garde Fondazione ETS, a nonprofit organization registered with the RUNTS. The Foundation’s activities aim to generate social impact through urban regeneration, the promotion of sustainable mobility, the celebration of diversity and inclusion, and the implementation of accessible cultural and educational initiatives. To support the museum’s development and the planning of public activities, the Foundation has launched a fundraising campaign aimed at individuals, institutions, and businesses interested in contributing to the project. Donations can be made through the MA-g official website or via the dedicated campaign on Donorbox.
With its new location at the Marche station, the Museum of Avant-garde aims to bring art out of traditional exhibition spaces, transforming a space of everyday mobility into a meeting point where artistic heritage, contemporary experimentation, and the community converge.
