A new Centre Pompidou will rise in Brazil: in fact, a memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Centre Pompidou and the State of Paraná (Brazil) for the creation of the Centre Pompidou x Paraná in Foz do Iguaçu.
This partnership, with an initial duration of five years, is a natural continuation of the collaboration initiated by Centre Pompidou in 2022 with the State of Paraná. The goal is to support the emergence of a world-class art center, in line with the Centre Pompidou’s global expansion strategy, which is already present in Málaga, Shanghai, Brussels, AlUla and, soon, Seoul. This agreement also testifies to the vibrancy of the cultural dialogue between France and Brazil, which will be at the center of the France-Brazil 2025 Season.
The future center, scheduled to open in November 2027, will be located in the heart of the Triple Frontier, near Iguazú Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Envisioned as an inclusive space open to all, it will offer a rich multidisciplinary program, including exhibitions, live performances, film cycles, festivals, conferences, and artist residencies.
Exhibitions will feed extensively on Centre Pompidou’s prestigious collection, offering the public the opportunity to connect with masterpieces from Europe’s largest collection of modern and contemporary art, the second largest in the world. The new center will not only be a showcase of world art, but also a place to highlight South American art and the vibrant cultural dynamics of the border area between Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay.
The architectural design is by Solano Benítez, an award-winning Paraguayan architect at the 2016 Venice Biennale. The building will be innovative and environmentally friendly, echoing the iconic model of the Centre Pompidou in Paris. It will overlook a public plaza and will house multipurpose spaces, laboratories for educational activities, a research library, workshops for artists, as well as a restaurant and a boutique.
