Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli signed a memorandum of understanding with the MAXXI Foundation, the Municipality of Messina and the University of Messina to structurally initiate the creation and management of MAXXI Med, a new international arts and cultural hub dedicated to the extended Mediterranean.
The agreement sanctions collaboration between the parties involved and defines the operational framework for the development of joint programs in the areas of contemporary arts, education, research, documentation and cultural cooperation with countries in Africa and the Mediterranean area. The project envisages the implementation of exhibition initiatives, educational activities and interdisciplinary paths of enhancement, as well as the recovery and use as MAXXI Med headquarters of the Morandi Towers and some buildings of the Villa Pace complex in Messina, made available by the municipal administration.
The General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Mission Unit for Cultural Cooperation with Africa and the Wider Mediterranean, will coordinate the strategic and scientific activities of the project, including through the involvement of the network of Italian Embassies and Institutes of Culture, promoting the signing of agreements, executive protocols and memoranda of understanding.
MAXXI Med will aim to promote cultural exchange, explore new trends in contemporary creativity and support research and training programs aimed both at the Italian context and at partners in the wider Mediterranean, contributing to the processes of cultural regeneration of the areas of Southern Italy.
The announcement of the signing of the memorandum of understanding for the establishment of MAXXI Med in Messina had already been made in July 2023; now, with yesterday’s signing, December 13, 2025, the establishment and management of MAXXI Med will be launched on a stable basis.
