With the arrival of spring, Villa delle Rose, a garden located in Gaeta within the Monte Orlando Regional Park between the ancient and modern city, reopens to the public. The site presents itself as a green area characterized by a collection of palm trees and a landscape planting designed as a space for research and conservation.
The garden was created in 1985 on the initiative of Nicola del Roscio, starting with the landscaping of previously abandoned land. Over time, the location and microclimate of the area favored the development of an articulated botanical collection, particularly related to subtropical species. The garden setting reflects a balance between human intervention and the natural dynamics of the environmental context. Today the Villa delle Rose covers about two hectares and is laid out across fourteen terraces sloping toward the Gulf of Gaeta. Within the garden are more than 150 species of palms from different areas of the world. Many specimens were obtained from seed and are traceable to varieties considered rare or, in some cases, at risk of extinction in their places of origin.
The tour is structured as a guided experience and provides access to information related to both botanical composition and site management practices. The methods adopted include the exclusive use of products of organic origin, the collection and reuse of rainwater and actions to protect biodiversity, including through the presence of beehives and the creation of favorable conditions for the presence of birds and small animals.
The management of the garden is entrusted to the Nicola del Roscio Foundation, which is committed to the conservation and enhancement of the botanical heritage in the area. The site is designated as a space intended for public enjoyment but also for activities related to environmental research and dissemination.
The Villa of Roses remains open through October exclusively on Saturday mornings. Visits are conducted in guided form with three rounds of entry scheduled at 9:00 am, 10:00 am and 11:00 am. Access is allowed only after acquiring a ticket, the official ticket office of which is managed by Grandi Giardini Italiani. The cost of the ticket is set at 15 euros for full price and 12 euros for visitors under 18.
