Ferrara: restoration for Carlo Bononi's Coronation ahead of major exhibition

Carlo Bononi's Coronation of the Virgin will undergo restoration in preparation for a major monographic exhibition opening in October at the Palazzo dei Diamanti (Ferrara).

TheCoronation of the Virgin, an important work by Ferrara painter Carlo Bononi (Ferrara, 1569 - 1632) preserved in the church of Santa Maria in Vado in Ferrara and painted between 1616 and 1620, will undergo a thorough restoration: the project came about as a result of an agreement signed by CIAS (Centro Ricerche Inquinamento Fisico Chimico Microbiologico Ambienti Alta Sterilità) of the University of Ferrara, Parrocchia dell’Annunciazione di Santa Maria in Vado, Consorzio Futuro in Ricerca, the Municipality of Ferrara and the Ferrara Arte Foundation, and will be conducted under the supervision of the Bologna Superintendency. The operational phase, on the other hand, will be entrusted to Fabio Bevilacqua and will be preceded by a long campaign of scientific studies also aimed at testing new techniques for microbiological decontamination of works of art.

The painting, an integral part of a cycle created for Santa Maria in Vado and representing one of the main masterpieces of Carlo Bononi and the entire seventeenth-century Ferrara, had been removed from its location following the seismic events that affected Emilia in 2012 and had undergone an initial emergency restoration the following year because it was in a very poor state of preservation: the new restoration that the work is about to undergo intends to solve the problems that remained open. The restoration will then be linked to the first major monographic exhibition on Carlo Bononi, which will be curated by Giovanni Sassu and Francesca Cappelletti and will open on October 14, 2017 at the Palazzo dei Diamanti (also in Ferrara), remaining open until January 7, 2018 (already decided on the title: Carlo Bononi. The Last Dreamer of the Ferrara Workshop). An appropriate popularization project is also being planned to raise awareness of the painting and the entire oeuvre of Carlo Bononi.

In addition, at the end of the restoration, another small exhibition, set up in Santa Maria in Vado, will document all its phases and accompany the main event in Palazzo dei Diamanti.
