Strasbourg is the World Book Capital 2024

UNESCO has named the 2024 World Book Capital: it will be Strasbourg. It is the 24th city to bear this title.

Strasbourg will be the World Book Capital 2024. After the Advisory Committee’s evaluation, UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay gave this recognition to the French city. “In uncertain times, many take refuge in books. Indeed, books have the unique ability to both entertain and teach. That is why we must ensure that everyone has access to knowledge and reflection through books and reading. That is why, every year, UNESCO designates a World Book Capital. After Guadalajara in 2022 and Accra in 2023, I am pleased to announce the nomination of Strasbourg as World Book Capital for 2024.”

UNESCO and the World Book Capital Advisory Committee were impressed by Strasbourg’s strong focus on books to address the challenges of social tensions and climate change, with programs such as Reading for the Planet. The city emphasizes the ability of books to encourage debate on environmental issues and scientific knowledge, and sees young people as agents of change. Strasbourg was also praised for its literary heritage and for the activities it organized highlighting many artistic disciplines, from music to theater to illustration.

The year of celebration will begin on April 23, 2024, on World Book Day.

Cities designated as UNESCO World Book Capitals pledge to promote books and reading for all ages, within and across national borders, and to organize a year-round program of activities.
