At the end of August, Giovanni Bellini ’s Dead Christ with Four Angels will leave the City Museum of Rimini to join the Giorgio Franchetti Gallery at Ca’ d’Oro in Venice, where it will undergo major restoration. With the signing of the deed of donation between the Venetian Heritage Onlus Foundation and the City of Rimini, the transfer of Bellini’s La Pietà to Venice thus officially kicks off.
The dismantling and transport operations will be handled by the staff of the Municipal Museums, in agreement with and under the supervision of the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio, which is responsible for the scientific direction of the intervention aimed at enhancing one of the Venetian artist’s most significant works.
The restoration will be carried out by C.B.C. - Conservazione Beni Culturali, the same company that handled the preliminary diagnostic investigations last spring. On that occasion, too, financial support was provided by the Venetian Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit organization that has been active for more than 25 years in the protection and promotion of Veneto’s artistic heritage around the world. The foundation is now fully funding the project, with a donation of 37,454 euros.
Restoration work will be completed indicatively in October, but the work will still remain in Venice to be the protagonist of a “dossier” exhibition, promoted by the Regional Directorate National Museums Veneto and hosted in the same spaces of the Giorgio Franchetti Gallery, also made possible thanks to the support of Venetian Heritage.
“An important operation takes shape,” stresses Culture Councillor Michele Lari, “which will not only allow us to enhance the value of one of the main works of our museum heritage that the city preserves, but at the same time allows us to strengthen relationships of collaboration and exchange with important realities such as the Venetian Heritage Foundation and Musei Nazionali Veneto, which are also strategic for affirming Rimini’s role as a city of art.”
