An event at Gallerie d'Italia will bring Pinin Brambilla Barcilon and Anna Zanoli into dialogue

A not-to-be-missed afternoon on Thursday, May 23, at the Gallerie d’Italia in Milan: the protagonists of this meeting will be Pinin Brambilla Barcilon, the restorer who spent 22 years (from 1977 to 1999) on the scaffolding of the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie to complete the last restoration campaign of Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, The Last Supper, and Anna Zanoli, the art documentary director who has made a precious testimony of it through her The Restoration of Leonardo’s Last Supper. Two direct witnesses of what was perhaps the most important restoration of the 20th century, who will talk about their extraordinary experience.

This will be followed by the screening of Zanoli’s two documentaries, Il restauro del Cenacolo di Leonardo (Anna Zanoli, Italy, 1987, 60’) and Il lungo restauro del Cenacolo (Anna Zanoli, Italy, 1999, 20’). The restoration of Leonardo’s Last Supper starts from the restoration completed by Pellicioli after the 1943 bombing and reconstructs other, older remakes of the work. The various painters who attempted to restore the Last Supper to its primitive splendor did so on the basis of studying copies made when Leonardo’s painting was fully legible. A comparison of one of these works, preserved first in Pavia and now in London, with the present state of the fresco makes it possible to trace the lost object of Leonardo’s Last Supper. Also interviewed in the documentary are the restoration directors and restorer Pinin Brambilla Barcilon, who explain the techniques adopted for the latest intervention, which began in ’79.

The Long Rest oration of the Last Supper is the latest documentary made by Anna Zanoli on the restoration of the Last Supper that collects the highlights of Pinin Brambilla’s long work, showing the final results. Admission is as always free while places last.

The event will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 23. For all information you can send an email to ultimacenaperimmagini@beniculturali.it.
