In March, the eighth edition of Milan MuseoCity 2024: the theme is Worlds in Milan

On the occasion of the eighth edition of Milano MuseoCity, the doors of public and private museums and artists' archives open for the public. This year's theme: Worlds in Milan.

Scheduled from March 1 to 5, 2024, is the eighth edition of Milano MuseoCity, the event promoted by the City of Milan in collaboration with the MuseoCity ETS Association that opens the doors of public and private museums, artists’ archives and house museums. The theme chosen for this year is Worlds in Milan, the purpose of which is to unite the 109 participants in a tribute to the city’s most distinctive characteristics: its sensitivity in welcoming diverse cultural stimuli and its ability to interconnect them to give life to a culture of its own. Two special projects are part of this edition’s novelties: Musei in Galleria and Musei in Vetrina.

Musei in Galleria is an initiative aimed at promoting cultural exchange and strengthening the concept of a widespread museum. Nine art galleries associated with ANGAMC, National Association of Modern and Contemporary Art Galleries, are hosting artworks or projects from as many museums and archives that are part of the MuseoCity network. The participants are: 10 A.M. ART with Leonardo3 Museum, Cardi Gallery with MAS - Museum of Art and Science, Dep Art Gallery with the Emilio Scanavino Archive, M77 Gallery with the Emilio Isgrò Foundation, NP ArtLab - Martelli Fine Art with Benevelli Archive, Nuova Galleria Morone with the Piero Manzoni Foundation, Osart Gallery with the Agnetti Archive, Salamon Fine Art with the Federica Galli Foundation, and Tommaso Calabro with the Fausta Squatriti Archive.

Musei in Vetrina highlights Milanese creativity and the close relationship between art and industry. Eleven prestigious Made in Italy brands set up special showcases that narrate their corporate cultures through archival materials and iconic pieces, such as: Alessi, Artemide, Atlas Concorde, Cassina, De Padova, Kartell, Lavazza, Marazzi, Missoni, Molteni&C, and Poltrona Frau. This approach makes Milano MuseoCity even more accessible and engaging for audiences unaccustomed to exhibition and museum spaces. Related to the concept behind Musei in Vetrina, the exhibition Exposure. Art, Cultures, Fashion Inside and Outside the Showcase at MUDEC, invites the public to explore the multiple meanings an object can take on within an exhibition showcase. Works by artists such as Theo Eshetu, Monia Ben Hamouda, Mark Dion, Sam Durant and Damien Hirst dialogue with the museum’s collections, offering an intriguing perspective on the relationship between art, culture and fashion. The Secret Museum section, an integral part of MuseoCity, presents 64 new or innovatively exhibited works this year, with a special focus on childhood. Through collaborations with Alchemilla, MuseoCity organizes in addition to that workshops for children offering them the opportunity to express their point of view and interpretation of art, starting from the works selected for Museo Segreto. Among the diverse and new participants are: Fondazione Fiera Milano Historical Archives, Sisal Historical Archives and Museum Diffuso, Touring Club Italiano Historical Archives, Banco BPM - Artistic Heritage, Giuseppe Iannaccone Collection, Gio Ponti Archives, Kasa dei Libri, Palazzina Appiani - FAI, and many others. On the occasion of the event, from March 2 to April 1, Palazzo Reale presents photographer Alex Trusty ’s exhibition Contemporary Museum Watching, which collects about 60 unpublished shots. In the works, taken between 2015 and 2023, Alex Trusty captures everything that happens around the artwork and particularly from the viewer’s point of view.

The eighth edition of Milano MuseoCity is increasingly shaping up as a diffuse exhibition, embracing sectors ranging from art to design, fashion to science, archaeology to literature and music. This event reflects the Milanese model of widespread culture, linking the public and private sectors. Milano MuseoCity this year has the support of Deutsche Bank, DWS and MUMAC - Cimbali Group’s Coffee Machine Museum as well as the collaboration of Abbonamento Musei Lombardia/Valle d’Aosta, ANGAMC - National Association of Modern and Contemporary Art Galleries, MUDE | Circuito Lombardo Musei Design, Museimpresa and Rete Fotografia. Among the many initiatives are: Stefania Tansini ’s contemporary dance performance L’ombelico dei limbi, at the PAC, inspired by French playwright and actor Antonin Artaud; Il giro del mondo in 5 Giornate (Around the World in 5 Days), promoted by the Associazione culturale Profumo di Milano, exhibits unique pieces of art and craftsmanship collected from the most hidden corners of the world, to restore to the public the imagery of Jules Verne ’s novel Il giro del mondo in 80 giorni (Around the World in 80 Days). The concert sponsored by the Leonardo3 Museum at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory, where you can listen to music played on the reproduction of musical instruments inspired by those conceived by the genius of Vinci; The yoga session at the Museo del Novecento, immersed in the neon light of Lucio Fontana; In the Vivaio Bicocca, researchers from the Department of Biotechnology and Biosciences - Biome Research Team, accompany visitors to discover the dense network of interactions between micro and macro organisms; At the conclusion of the event, the screening at the Teatro Filodrammatici of the film Mondi a Milano dedicated to the MuseoCity network, directed by Giovanni Pitscheider, and made thanks to the support of MUMAC - Cimbali Group’s Coffee Machine Museum.
