An exhibition at the Estense Galleries on the spoliations and restitutions of the heritage of the Estense Library

Returning Treasures: at the Estense Galleries, an exhibition addresses the theme of spoliations and restitutions (almost always partial) of the Estense Library's holdings.

From September 16, 2022 to January 7, 2023, the Estensi Galleries presents the exhibition Treasures Returning. Justice and Cultural Legacy. Through period documents and materials, the exhibition addresses the theme of the spoliations and restitutions of the Biblioteca Estense ’s patrimony and the citizens’ right tocultural inheritance, starting with an analysis of three relevant cases involving some Este heirlooms.

In the course of its long history, the Biblioteca Estense of Modena has in fact also suffered major depredations, which ended with almost always partial restitutions. Thanks to the richness of the historical archives of the Biblioteca Estense and the library itself, each of the three examples is accompanied by the documents that recount the events and a selection of the disputed materials so as to recreate for the public the context behind the restitution affair.

Among the works on display is the Tetravangelo in Greek, a Greek minuscule evangeliary that constitutes a valuable example of Byzantine miniature and was probably acquired around 1560 for the Libreria degli Estensi by Girolamo Faletti, ambassador to Venice of Alfonso II d’Este. Also, the second edition of St. Augustine’s De civitate Dei, the Polyglot Liturgy, and St. Augustine’s Contra Faustum Manicheum, also by St. Augustine.
