At Villa Carlotta, an exhibition offers an unprecedented key to its park, through the various eras

Villa Carlotta in Tremezzina (Como) offers in an exhibition a new key to its park. The appearance of the garden in its different historical periods will be illustrated.

Villa Carlotta in Tremezzina, on Lake Como, offers until Dec. 10, 2023, anunprecedented key to the Villa’s park. The exhibition itinerary titled The Wonders of the Garden, curated by Maria Angela Previtera and Elena Lissoni, unfolds through four sections through which it aims to illustrate the appearance of the garden in its different historical periods. From the lemons that already lined the walls of the terraces in the seventeenth century at the time of the Marquises Clerici, to the fruits cultivated from the Napoleonic age in the agricultural sector with Giovanni Battista Sommariva, to the splendid collections of camellias and azaleas desired by Duke George II in the second half of the nineteenth century and the new interventions carried out by the Authority since 1927. A history that continues today with the project A step into the park, a step into the future. Villa Carlotta a resource for the territory, initiated under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRP) and funded by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU plan.

Through a multidisciplinary look, the exhibition proceeds by juxtaposing heterogeneous materials (botanical plates, paintings, engravings, sculptures) from the seventeenth century to contemporary times. The history of the garden is reconstructed through some unpublished works from Villa Carlotta’s collections and others from Lombard museums, the Reggia di Caserta, and private collections. On the occasion of the exhibition, loans have arrived from some entities such as the Accademia Carrara of Bergamo and Fondazione Brescia Musei.

“With this important exhibition, which closes a season full of cultural events, Villa Carlotta wants to enhance its botanical heritage, rereading its events and evolution in the last three centuries, as part of a broader project of recovery and promotion of the park,” stressed Maria Angela Previtera, director of Villa Carlotta.

Accompanying the exhibition is the catalog and a rich calendar of special events and guided tours bookable from the Events section of the website www.villacarlotta.it
