Between sea monsters and great vessels, the sea of Genoa from the 16th to the 19th century. An exhibition at Palazzo Rosso

In Genoa from September 19 to December 2, 2018, Palazzo Rosso is hosting the exhibition 'On the Sea. Images of Genoa between the 16th and 19th centuries'.

Entitled On the Sea. Images of Genoa between the Sixteenth and Nineteenth Centuries, the new exhibition at Palazzo Rosso (Strada Nuova Museums) in Genoa, scheduled from September 19 to December 2, 2018. The exhibition intends to take visitors on a real journey by sea (but also by land) from the 16th to the 19th century on the Genoese coastline: on display are representations of the city over the span of more than three centuries, between reality and fiction, including sea monsters and great vessels, allegories celebrating its glory, and ancient maps that drew the outline of the coast.

From the oldest images where Genoa is seen from the sea to more recent ones that focus mainly on the many stately palaces with which the city is filled and which can still be visited today (one is precisely Palazzo Rosso, the exhibition venue): many of them, moreover, overlook the sea. And again, the great battles that were fought in the sea in front of Genoa, the great festivals (with dances on floating ballrooms or large temporary stages), the nineteenth-century romantic-style portraits of the city, and the projects that were never realized.

The exhibition is open until Oct. 7 Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (Friday, Sept. 28 and Oct. 5 open until 9 p.m.), Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. From October 9 onward, Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Closed on Mondays. For more information you can visit the exhibition page on the city portal.
