Milan, Palazzo Reale dedicates an exhibition to Emilio Vedova for the 100th anniversary of his birth

From December 6, 2019 to February 9, 2020, Palazzo Reale in Milan is dedicating an exhibition to Emilio Vedova for the 100th anniversary of his birth.

At the Palazzo Reale in Milan, the exhibition Emilio Vedova opens to the public from December 6, 2019 to February 9, 2020. The exhibition, entirely dedicated to one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, Emilio Vedova (Venice, 1919 - 2006), is promoted by Comune di Milano Cultura, Palazzo Reale and Fondazione Emilio e Annabianca Vedova and is curated by Germano Celant.

The exhibition was created with a design and layout that sees the Sala delle Cariatidi of Palazzo Reale as the ideal exhibition venue, proposing an unusual key to express the painter’s artistic language. For this exhibition, which focuses on two decisive periods in the evolution of Vedova’s pictorial thought (the 1960s and the 1980s), an intervention, designed by Rome-based studio Alvisi Kirimoto, will be created, with a 30-meter-long and 5-meter-high wall surrounded by an independent light structure that crosses the hall diagonally, almost provoking its architectural severity, in a “contrast of situations,” as Vedova would have expressed himself. In this torn context, some 70 works, some of them of imposing dimensions, including the famous Absurdes Berliner Tagebuch ’64 that will be possible to see exhibited in its entirety, are displayed, both on the wall and on the floor.

In the case of Emilio Vedova, the intention is to work on the strong scenographic component of the environment in which to bring out, in the two opposing parts, the innovative and radical aspects of Vedova’s linguistic contribution to the events of modern and contemporary art. That is, to compare his works of the 1960s, paintings and sculptures, such as the Plurimi cycle, with the large canvases and Disks, installed on the floor, of the 1980s. In such a dialogue between extremes, the fundamental value of Emilio Vedova ’s work in the context of international contemporary art is made explicit.
