The exhibition aims to illustrate how the subject of still life developed between the late 16th and the late 17th century in Europe: fifty masterpieces from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and presented for the first time in Italy will be on display, including works by Francesco Bassano, Jan Brueghel, Pieter Claesz, Willem Claesz Heda, Jan Weenix, Gerard Dou, Evaristo Baschenis, Gasparo Lopez dei Fiori, and Elisabetta Marchioni.

The exhibition itinerary will develop both chronologically and thematically: it will begin in the second half of the 16th century with a selection of market scenes and depictions of the seasons by Francesco Bassano and Lodovico Pozzoserrato; it will continue with the Flemish markets of Frederik van Valckenborch and Jan Baptist Saive the Elder, and it is in the Netherlands that artists depicted scientific still lifes with bouquets of flowers, vanitas, set tables, religious still lifes, and hunting scenes.

A selection of Italian still lif es will present through the works of Evaristo Baschenis, Gasparo Lopez dei Fiori, and Elisabetta Marchioni the spread of this genre in centers south of the Alps.

To these works will be added a section curated by Denis Curti dedicated to contemporary photography that aims to show how the still life theme is present in the shots of famous international artists. One will admire David LaChapelle’s Vanitas, Martin Parr ’s reportages on mass consumption, Robert Mapplethorpe’s flowers, Nobuyoshi Araki’s Flowers, Franco Vimercati ’s series dedicated to soup tureens, and Hans Op De Beeck’s pictorial classicism.
