Palazzo Ducale in Genoa dedicates an exhibition to Guido Rossa photographer

Palazzo Ducale in Genoa dedicates an exhibition to Guido Rossa photographer to raise awareness of lesser-known aspects of his personality, beyond the tragedy.

From January 14 to February 20, 2022, the exhibition Guido Rossa Fotografo is open to the public in the Liguria Room of the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa. Even in a Small Thing, curated by Gabriele D’Autilia and Sergio Luzzatto.

The exhibition aims to present lesser-known aspects of Guido Rossa’s personality, going beyond the best-known story, the story often reduced to the tragedy, personal and collective, of his death. The 1970s, the years in which he found death, are also charged with enthusiasm and conflict, commitment and violence. There is almost a parallel life in which thesocial and political dimensions prove inadequate to fill a restless personality, sensitive to art and poetry.

Rossa entered the factory at the age of fifteen in 1949 and, before she was even twenty, defied gravity by becoming a legend in the Piedmont mountains and even practicing skydiving as a professional. In Genoa, the very environment of Italsider in Cornigliano, where Eugenio Carmi is in charge of art direction and communication, represents for him not only a working context, but also an opportunity to experiment with his creative energy: photography soon becomes a space of freedom, a silent and intimate commitment.

In 1963 he is in Nepal to measure himself against the seven thousand meters of the Himalayan Langtang-Lirung: the highest mountain range in the world acquires in his eyes a spiritual dimension that compels reflection, even through the photographic lens. Rossa is struck by Indian and Nepalese social reality, which he documents in many shots: subjects include snake charmers and beggars, caste injustice, Tibetan children. Mountains and photography can act as a completion of life: they open the way to a more fulfilled dimension of the self, which can be found at dizzying heights, or even in a small thing.
