Piacenza, in Volumnia gallery exhibition on Milanese architect and designer Franco Albini

From April 16 to June 18, 2023, Volumnia, the Piacenza-based space dedicated to art and design, opens 'Franco Albini. Method and Poetry,' a retrospective exhibition chronicling the figure of the renowned architect through a selection of design and architectural works.

Franco Albini. Method and Poetry is the title of the retrospective curated by Stefano Andrea Poli on one of the most significant architects of the 20th century: Franco Albini (Robbiate, Oct. 17, 1905 - Milan, Nov. 1, 1977), a Milanese architect and designer will be narrated through a selection of works of design and architecture, in Piacenza, in the Volumnia space dedicated to art and design.

The exhibition, scheduled from April 16 to June 18, 2023, makes use of an iconographic apparatus granted by the Franco Albini Foundation, thanks to which specific archival research was carried out. The layout is designed by Studio Albini Associati in relation to the evocative architectural space of the former church of Sant’Agostino, punctuating the exhibition’s path through a series of legible vertical panels on both sides and punctual stations dedicated to the furniture. The lighting, specially created by Davide Groppi, enhances the peculiarities of the works and the display apparatus.

The exhibition aims to highlight some aspects that link different areas of Franco Albini’s work, from the architectural project to the design of the furniture. Indeed, Albini’s work appears to be a balanced synthesis between an analytical method, based on the study of technique and history, and a persistent poetic afflatus. The visitor will be welcomed by an introductory section, which will host a brief discussion of the relationship between the architect and the Piacenza area.

A first narrative section, entrusted to historical images from the archives of the Franco Albini Foundation, will weave a visual dialogue between architecture, furnishings and installations, while a documentary video will illustrate Franco Albini’s approach to architecture and design. The second part of the exhibition will take the visitor into the world of Franco Albini’s furniture, through the display of numerous historical pieces, mostly made by the Poggi factory, the historic carpentry firm in Pavia with which the designer has woven a privileged and almost exclusive relationship since the 1950s.

Among the furnishings, the Luisa armchair, awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1955 and later reissued by Cassina, could not be missing. In particular, the presence of a nucleus of pieces from the 1930s from private collections, which are being displayed in public for the first time, gives the exhibition special historical interest. Matter, design and poetry combine in a path unraveled within a venue unique in structure, history and beauty.
