It will be the largest exhibition ever dedicated to Piero della Francesca: this is how the National Gallery in London announced it, noting that the exhibition will bring together, for the first time in centuries, some of Piero della Francesca’s most important altarpieces. The exhibition, simply titled “Piero della Francesca,” will be held in the Sainsbury Wing from October 2, 2027, to January 30, 2028, and will bring works from museums around the world to the British capital, alongside paintings already in the National Gallery’s collection.
Among the announced loans is the famous double portrait of Federico da Montefeltro and Battista Sforza, on loan from the Uffizi in Florence. Also on display will be the Polyptych of Saint Anthony, housed in Perugia, while the National Gallery will exhibit three works by Piero from its own collections: The Baptism of Christ, Saint Michael, and The Nativity. The goal is to offer a comprehensive overview of the artist’s oeuvre, bringing together some of his most famous compositions and allowing visitors to view them within a unified exhibition context.
The exhibition aims to explore the unique approach to painting developed by Piero, in which his exploration of light intertwines with his mathematical studies and his reflections on perspective. His images are distinguished by their rigorous spatial composition, the presence of natural landscapes and harmonious architecture, and figures gathered in a suspended stillness. These elements helped transform the way sacred stories were depicted and captured the interest of the most cultured courts on the Italian peninsula, beginning with those of the great Italian lords and dukes.
Piero della Francesca (Borgo San Sepolcro, 1412–1492) was a painter, but also a mathematician and theorist of perspective. His career unfolded in an Italy dotted with major artistic and cultural centers, spanning Tuscany, Umbria, and the Marche. His research into geometry and the representation of space found expression in both his paintings and his treatises, helping to define one of the most original movements of the Renaissance.
The National Gallery also examines the artist’s enduring legacy beyond his own time: the exhibition aims to highlight how his works continue to influence contemporary artists, filmmakers, and writers.
