Pinacoteca di Brera, on loan from the Orangerie Matisse's masterpiece. In dialogue with Bonnard

From the Musée de l'Orangerie comes to the Pinacoteca di Brera a masterpiece by Henri Matisse that will be placed in dialogue with another masterpiece by Pierre Bonnard. September 11, 2023 to January 15, 2024.

From Sept. 11, 2023, to Jan. 15, 2024, the Pinacoteca di Brera presents Four Talks Between Matisse & Bonnard. A special dialogue between two artists, Matisse and Bonnard, through two of their masterpieces; Femme au violon by Henri Matisse, from the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, will be exhibited in Room XXIII next to Pierre Bonnard’s Portrait of Marta Bonnard.

The two artists had a special relationship as well as shared pictorial characteristics and themes. From the Musée de L’Orangerie in Paris, where two Portraits by Modigliani are on loan, the painting by Henri Matisse thus arrives in Brera, which, next to the painting by Pierre Bonnard, is intended to testify to the strong relationship, especially epistolary, that was established between the two masters of theearly 20th century avant-garde. Coming one from the Fauve experience, the other from the Nabis group, Matisse and Bonnard considered the role of color - luminous, contrasted, pure, intense - as the constitutive material of painting-making to be fundamental; both often tackled the female subject in an interior, with different languages: on the one hand, synthetic compositions of flat, two-dimensional surfaces of great visual immediacy; on the other, profusion of brushstrokes that make the many elements present vibrate, dilating the boundaries of the canvas.

Matisse’s model and Bonnard’s companion, portrayed posing in a moment of pause testify to the centrality of women, inspiring images recreated from reality, making them eternal.
