Scuderie del Quirinale celebrates Ovid, the poet of love

From October 17 to February 20, Rome celebrates the great poet Ovid with an exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale: 'Ovid. Loves, Myths and Other Stories'

Opening on October 17, 2018, the exhibition Ovid. Loves, Myths and Other Stories, which will be held at the Scuderie del Quirinale until Feb. 20, 2019 to celebrate the bimillenary of the poet of love. Among the authors of Latinity, Publius Ovid Nason (Sulmona, 43 B.C.-Tomi, 17 or 18) is certainly one of the most beloved; his verses, whether they speak of love, myths or the stories of the gods always return to everyone the image of a living and culturally dynamic world. But what do writing and image have in common? How to emphasize the importance of words through works? How to tell the importance in Western history of a poet like Ovid through other arts, other artists, other forms?

These are the questions that the exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale aims to answer in a simple and rigorous, engaging and surprising way along a thematic itinerary that addresses Ovid’s life and the influence of his literary work on both his era and the West, reaching up to the present day. More than 200 works including ancient frescoes and sculptures, priceless medieval manuscripts and paintings from the modern age will accompany the narrative of the poet’s life and the themes at the center of his writings: love, seduction, the relationship with power and myth.

The exhibition, curated by Francesca Ghedini, will be an opportunity, in the context of the Ovidian bimillenary, to present the characteristics of Roman society in the early imperial age, reconstructed through the filter of Ovid’s poetry, which over time helped to outline the contours of Western culture.
Within the exhibition halls of the Scuderie will be a variety of visiting routes among works, words and workshop experiences; in the city a rich program of meetings, readings and in-depth studies will allow visitors to discover and rediscover the complexity of the Ovidian universe. For all information and to book an entrance ticket, you can visit the Scuderie’s official website.
