Soulmate / Cellmate, the first solo exhibition in Milan by Zhivago Duncan

From April 2 to June 28, 2019, Galleria Poggiali in Milan is hosting Zhivago Duncan's first solo exhibition in the Lombard capital.

Galleria Poggiali in Milan is presenting the first solo exhibition in Milan of artist Zhivago Duncan (Terre Haute, USA, 1980) from April 2 to June 28, 2019.

Soulmate/ Cellmate, this is the title of the exhibition, will present a new selection of works created especially for the show: paintings, sculptures, ceramics in dialogue with the project-room. For his new works, Duncan used the Batik technique: an ancient technique that can give an extraordinary luminosity to his works. This originated from accidental mistakes in the dyeing of fabrics, namely stains of grease or other substances that prevented the color from dyeing. In particular, the artist used wax, with which he covered some parts of the paintings, thus allowing the color to penetrate the surface of the canvas. The result was unique works with unusual shapes that hark back to theexotic andabstract.

The son of a Danish father and a Syrian mother, Duncan came into contact with different environments, their stories, myths and legends.
In Soulmate / Cellmate he intends to express a desire to reconnect with his past, with his roots. He intends to create a world in the exhibition that is strongly linked to his ancestral heritage: “All of this is rendered on canvas through a network of quotations, prophecies and images of deities, taken from ancient Syrian narratives. Underlying Duncan’s creative process is a yearning quest to uncover hidden interconnections. Investigation expressed by a joyous universe of form and color, beneath which in reality, lie fragile foundations and a deep inner lament,” writes Kit Hammonds in a catalog essay.

In addition to the large canvases, many sculptures of molded and glazed clay will be on display. A set of clouds, bubbles, cells, organelles and mitochondria in constant flux recreate imaginary, light, floating environments. Environments that tell of biological processes, phenomena that originate life and the laws that govern them.
