Turin, at Gallerie d'Italia, exhibition tracing Mimmo Jodice's main themes

Until Jan. 7, 2024, the Gallerie d'Italia in Turin is hosting the exhibition "Mimmo Jodice Senza tempo," the second installment of the project that aims to pay homage to the great Italian masters of photography.

The Gallerie d’Italia in Turin continues the La Grande Fotografia Italiana project, launched in 2022 with the major monographic exhibition Lisetta Carmi. Playing Loud, with the exhibition Mimmo Jodice Senza tempo, curated by Roberto Koch and under the patronage of the Piedmont Region and the City of Turin. The exhibition is on view until January 7, 2024.

The project was created with the intention of offering a tribute to the great Italian masters of photography. The exhibition projects also include the involvement of another artist alongside the chosen author: in this case Mario Martone, a renowned director and author, directed and produced a documentary film on the life of Mimmo Jodice, his friend and fellow citizen, which is being shown in the exhibition halls for the first time.

Born in Naples in 1934, Jodice approached photography attracted by its ability to create visions. A refined and intimate process that feeds on his personal memories, of an existence lived in a city like Naples, blazing and secret, made of places and memories to be revealed and understood. The exhibition is dedicated precisely to Mimmo Jodice’s ability to show the public reality seen through the filter of a different and suspended time.

The exhibition offers a significant summary of Jodice’s production, tracing the main themes that inspire his art in as many sections of the exhibition: Anamnesis, Languages, Views of Naples, City, Nature, Seas. On display are eighty photographs taken from 1964 to 2011, including some of the Neapolitan master’s iconic works. From photos immortalizing statues and mosaics, vestiges of ancient Mediterranean civilizations, to an experimental and conceptual interest in the language of photography; from urban views of Naples and other contemporary metropolises, charged with absence and silence, in which, as the author writes, “reality and my inner vision coincide,” to transfigurations of the natural landscape to the poignant melancholy of its seas. The Nature section, with works exhibited for the first time, adds a new and further chapter to his research.

On the occasion of the exhibition, starting in October, a rich schedule will be presented for the traditional #INSIDE public program scheduled on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m., with free appointments open to the public.
