An acclaimed art critic, he has written for newspapers such as the Financial Times, Los Angeles Times, and Los Angeles Weekly, as well as art magazines such as Flash Art, Artforum, Artpresse, Frieze, Parkett, and Grand Street. His publications include monographs on Mark Wallinger, George Condo and Anya Gallacio, as well as publications such as Circus Americanus (1995), a collection of essays on contemporary American culture. In 2005 he won the first Ordway Prize for best curator of contemporary art.
