Lungomare ad Arte: a project in Livorno to learn about the places of great artists

The Lungomare ad Arte project is born in Livorno: a path with interactive panels to learn about the places depicted by the great Macchiaioli and post-Macchiaioli artists.

Livorno’s waterfront is filled with art: in fact, the Lungomare ad Arte project, promoted by the Agave cooperative, winner of the funds provided by the Livorno Foundation’s Interventi per l’Arte e la Cultura 2023 call for proposals, has been presented with the patronage of the Municipality of Livorno and the collaboration of partners Fondazione Livorno, Gruppo Labronico, Play Qr, Finestre sull’Arte, Visit Livorno and the Port System Authority of the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea. The project aims to combine tradition and innovation, starting with an analysis of the territorial context, its potential and needs to highlight significant and iconic places of the city, its history and territorial identity. With this in mind, Agave has devised an itinerary that highlights the corners of the coast that have influenced the history of art, with the intention of giving official recognition to these places and the works they have inspired.

The initiative was created to enhance the architectural and scenic landmarksalong Livorno’s waterfront, highlighting their connection to history and art. These landmarks will help enrich the local topography, outlining new urban routes, derivations and autonomous narratives. In parallel, we aim to promote both the works of art and the artists who created them, as well as the cultural realities that host or guard them, whether museums, institutions of various kinds or private collections.

Art, culture and territory are the protagonists of this route, which combines the traditional use of explanatory panels with more contemporary and multimedia languages, through the use of QR codes that will provide dynamic information to users. The project involves the creation of a path of panels along Livorno’s waterfront, which will point out landscape views and some historical buildings portrayed by important painters, both from Livorno and elsewhere. The goal is to create an open-air gallery that will accompany people as they stroll along Livorno’s coastline, offering a walking route that will intrigue passersby and create a connection with the area, its landscape and history.

The itinerary will be accompanied by a series of panels specially placed in places that have inspired numerous famous painters, thus creating a direct comparison between past and present, between painting and the surrounding reality. Initially, the route will include seven panels, to which two more will be added, adopted and sponsored by different realities, bringing the total to 9 panels distributed along about 6 km of coastline. In the future, the route may be enriched with further additions.

The stops along the route are the Porto Mediceo, the Quattro Mori Monument, theAndana degli Anelli, the Bagni Pancaldi, the Bagni Acquaviva, the Lazzeretto, the Baracchina Rossa, the Tamerice and the Marina di Antignano, which can be seen in the works of Guglielmo Micheli, Annibale Gatti, Raffaele Gambogi, Alfredo Müller, Osvaldo Peruzzi, Mario Puccini, Ulvi Liegi, Giovanni Fattori and Giovanni Lomi, respectively.

Each panel will feature an image reproducing a painting made by famous painters, accompanied by a description of the work and its English translation. In addition, a QR-code will be placed on each panel that, when scanned with a cell phone or other mobile device, will provide access to additional content, including a video presentation of the project and information about the artist and his work. Through the additional content, efforts will be made to encourage visitors to go to the institutions housing the paintings (when open to the public) or to learn more about the artist and the place. Through web pages specially created for browsing from mobile devices, visitors will be able to access in-depth fact sheets on the history of the place, accompanied by historical photos and documents, as well as see other paintings of the same scenery immortalized by historical or contemporary artists.

In addition, visitors will have access to additional fact sheets that will explain the entire project, providing details about the itinerary, the precise location of the panel in question, and a display of the next stage of the route. Each panel will be marked with uniform graphics that will allow users to easily follow the itinerary, including through geolocation that will allow them to locate upcoming stops along the route. The contents of the QR-codes will be able to be updated with new events related to the itinerary, enabling the sharing of new cultural initiatives and the creation of communication circuits to promote the city’s artistic activities.

The Artful waterfront initiative is not configured as a static and concluded project, but as an open and constantly evolving process, the result of a participatory approach. Through the Adopt-a-Panel campaign, subjects of various kinds, including associations, artists’ archives, foundations, and public or private entities, can apply to participate in the enhancement of additional views of Livorno’s waterfront and other works or artists at the same time. Interested parties may submit a request for the affixing of a new panel, indicating a section of the coastline and the work associated with it, or they may opt to adopt a panel suggested by the sponsoring entities. By bearing the costs of fabrication and installation, the applicant will contribute to the creation of a new landscape mapping and the subsequent implementation of a cultural and tourist itinerary. Each application will be evaluated by a scientific committee composed of representatives of the promoting entities in order to ensure the historical and artistic quality of the new additions.
