A year and a half after the opening of the new CAMeC - Center for Modern and Contemporary Art of La Spezia, which took place as part of the public-private partnership between the City of La Spezia and Fondazione Carispezia, and in anticipation of theopening of the upcoming exhibition Rethinking Romanticism in Contemporary Art, curated by Elena Volpato (scheduled from April 11 to September 13, 2026), the museum presents the new Scientific Committee in charge of guiding its cultural and artistic choices. At the same time, CAMeC expresses its thanks to Antonio Grulli, who has accompanied the institution in recent months and who recently left the post, less than a year after his appointment, to devote himself entirely to the Turin public art project Luci d’Artista, of which he is curator.
The new Scientific Committee is chaired by Gerhard Wolf, director of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz - Max Planck Institut and a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Science and Letters. He is responsible for the recent remounting of CAMeC’s permanent collection, conceived as an innovative exhibition itinerary involving more than 200 works from the museum’s holdings. Alongside Wolf, the committee brings together leading figures in the artistic and cultural scene: Arturo Galansino, general director of the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi in Florence; Francesco Guzzetti, associate professor of contemporary art history at the University of Florence; and Giuseppe Iannacone, a lawyer and collector, founder of the Giuseppe Iannacone Foundation committed to supporting young artists and promoting projects with a strong social impact; Giulia Lecchini, an Italian-British architect, founder of the Friends of CAMeC association and coordinator of the Committee; Mirjam Varadinis, curator at the Kunsthaus Zurich; Elena Volpato, curator and conservator at GAM - Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Turin.
“CAMeC today represents one of the pillars of the cultural growth of the city of La Spezia, and the path undertaken, following the partnership between the City Council and Fondazione Carispezia, is yielding concrete and significant results,” said La Spezia Mayor Pierluigi Peracchini. “The establishment of such a high-profile Scientific Committee confirms the will to invest with determination in the quality and authority of the cultural proposal, strengthening the museum’s role in the national and international scene. I thank Antonio Grulli for his collaboration over the past months and renew my thanks to all the professionals involved who will continue to make CAMeC an increasingly dynamic and attractive reality, capable of engaging the public and enhancing the contemporary artistic heritage.”
“The appointment of the Scientific Committee represents an important step in the process of consolidating CAMeC as a cultural reference point for the city and the territory,” said Fondazione Carispezia President Andrea Corradino. “The presence of high-profile personalities confirms the shared desire on the part of the City of La Spezia and Fondazione Carispezia to invest in the quality of the cultural proposal and in the solidity of research, strengthening the museum’s role on the national and international scene. Fondazione Carispezia will continue to support, with a view to collaboration and shared responsibility, projects capable of generating cultural value for the community and opportunities for participation, with particular attention to the new generations. In this perspective, CAMeC confirms itself as a strategic cultural infrastructure, capable of fostering relationships, knowledge and openness to the national and international context.”
“The formation of the Scientific Committee, with its seven influential members, represents the most important step in the path, undertaken in 2024, for the enhancement of CAMeC and its collections. This body is a meeting point of scientific expertise, different visions and sensibilities, united by the common goal of enhancing the artistic heritage and promoting contemporary research,” commented Giacomo Bei, chairman of the technical committee. “The high standing of the Scientific Committee will offer authoritative guidance and critical stimulus, helping to guide the museum’s cultural choices and increase dialogue with the national and international scene.”
