The Royal Palace of Caserta is launching a fundraising campaign throughthe Art Bonus program to finance conservation and restoration work on the Palatine Library. The project has an estimated cost of 220,874.66 euros and aims to ensure the preservation of the book collection and historic furnishings, which are facing critical issues linked in part to changes in thermo-hygrometric parameters associated with climate change.
The library houses approximately 15,000 valuable volumes, preserved on period bookshelves and in period furnishings, characterized by their fine woodworking and spatial organization. Among the most important documents are the first edition of Luigi Vanvitelli’s *Declaration of the Designs for the Royal Palace of Caserta*, published in 1756 by the Royal Printing Offices of Naples, and the original correspondence from Vanvitelli’s *Letters*, dating from 1751 to 1768.
The restoration plan includes the conservation restoration of the 150 books and documents in the greatest need of care, the dusting of the entire collection, and targeted pest control of the bookcases and furnishings. Funding will be supported by donations from citizens, public entities, and private individuals participating in the Art Bonus program, an initiative that allows patrons to contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage.
Located on the east side of the Royal Palace, the Palatine Library documents the cultural era fostered by the Bourbons. Its formation was initiated by Queen Maria Carolina, who sought to organize an official collection entrusted to experts and divided into eight categories: Religion, History, Language Dictionaries, Natural History, Fine Arts, Poetry and Travel, Government, and Education. The collection was subsequently expanded during the French period through acquisitions commissioned by Caroline Murat.
