Unicef Baby Pit Stop arrives at Colosseum, a space dedicated to breastfeeding and diaper changing

A few days ago the Colosseum Archaeological Park opened a new space dedicated to breastfeeding and diaper changing: it is the Unicef Baby Pit Stop. In Italy there are already more than 900 scattered throughout the country.

Comfortable armchairs, washbasin, changing tables and play area: the Baby Pit Stop, sponsored by UNICEF and set up in a new space created by the Colosseum Archaeological Park as part of the redevelopment of a section of the monument’s second level, was also inaugurated at the Colosseum a few days ago.

With the support of IKEA Rome, which donated the furnishings, a space of two rooms has been set up for mothers who will need to breastfeed or change diapers during their visit, or even just a quiet moment for little visitors. The rooms are located on the second level of the Colosseum and have a dedicated and appropriately marked entrance along the tour route; to gain access, contact the security and reception staff.

"Breastfeeding is a simple and natural gesture that all mothers should be able to do anywhere, but sometimes it is difficult, if not prohibitive, to find a suitable place to stop," said Paolo Rozera, Director General of UNICEF Italy. “On behalf of UNICEF Italy we want to thank the Colosseum Archaeological Park for this important initiative, a good practice that will have a great response among many families. It is important that places of culture, of educational and cultural growth of the person, are also services attentive to the needs of citizens and, in particular, of families. We also thank IKEA Rome, our long-standing partner, for its support and for once again committing to the side of children.”

"Welcoming, accessibility and safety, these are the key words of our mission to offer the public, who in all seasons of the year come to visit us, the pleasure of a comfortable visit, suitable for all ages," commented Alfonsina Russo, General Director of the Colosseum Archaeological Park. “UNICEF’s new breastfeeding space is one more piece in the range of services that the PArCo makes available to visitors on a daily basis, thus meeting the multiple needs of audiences who come from all over the world. I thank UNICEF and IKEA Rome for following up and reaching an important milestone with PArCo.”

The Unicef Baby Pit Stops are inspired by the La Leche League initiative of the same name; it is one of the initiatives implemented by UNICEF to guarantee the rights enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child and Adolescent, in particular Article 24, which protects the right to health, and is part of the UNICEF “Together for Breastfeeding” Program. To date, 31 Hospitals, 7 Communities recognized by UNICEF as Baby Friendly, 4 Degree Courses recognized as Breastfeeding Friendly are part of the Unicef program in Italy. There are more than nine hundred Baby Pit Stops set up throughout the country (they are already present, for example, in the Civic Museums of Venice, at the Regional Gallery of Sicily in Palazzo Abatellis, at the Reggia di Monza, Museo del Mare in San Benedetto del Tronto, and in many other Italian cultural venues) and plans are to set up another 1,500 by 2026.
