Oscars 2020, historic triumph for Parasite, first non-English language film to win best picture

A historic edition of the Academy Awards, where Bong Joon-ho’s film Parasite came out on top: the Korean film, which had already won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, was the first Korean film to be nominated for an Oscar and won four statuettes, including Best Picture (it is the first non-English language film to win it in the entire history of the Academy Awards). For Parasite, Bong Joon-ho also won best director, best original screenplay, and best international film. Best Actor in a Leading Role goes to Joaquín Phoenix for Joker (a performance for which he had already won the Golden Globe, BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild Award), while Best Actress in a Leading Role is Renée Zellweger for Judy (again, the role had already won her the Golden Globe, BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild Award).

Best Supporting Actors, on the other hand, are Brad Pitt for Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood and Laura Dern for Story of a Marriage, Toy Story 4 is best animated film, the award for best cinematography goes to Roger Deakins for 1917, Taika Waititi wins best non-original screenplay for Jojo Rabbit. Also, best set design to Barbara Ling and Nancy Haigh for Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood, best editing to Andrew Buckland and Michael McCusker for Le Mans ’66 - The Great Challenge, best score to Hildur Guðnadóttir for Joker, best song to (I’m Gonna) Love Me Again by Elton John and Bernie Taupin for Rocketman, best special effects to Greg Butler, Dominic Tuohy and Guillaume Rocheron for 1917, best sound to Mark Taylor and Stuart Wilson for 1917, best sound editing to Donald Sylvester for Le Mans ’66 - The Great Challenge, best costumes to Jacqueline Durran for Little Women, best makeup and hairstyling to Vivian Baker, Anne Morgan and Kazuhiro Tsuji for Bombshell - The Voice of Scandal.

Finally, best documentary is Made in USA - A Factory in Ohio by Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert, best short film is The Neighbors’ Window by Marshall Curry, best animated short film is Hair Love by Bruce W. Smith, Matthew A. Cherry and Everett Downing Jr. and best documentary short is Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl) by Carol Dysinger.

The most awarded film, with four statuettes, was Parasite, followed by 1917 with three awards and Joker, Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood and Le Mans ’66 - The Great Challenge with two Oscars each. Disappointment for The Irishman, a multiple nominee with ten nominations (second only to Joker, which had eleven): no awards for Martin Scorsese’s film.
