A total of 27 Italian municipalities have been selected for the first edition of “Cultura nei piccoli Comuni,” an initiative by the Ministry of Culture aimed at municipalities with fewer than 25,000 residents, created to support cultural initiatives and strengthen local identities.
Twenty-seven Italian municipalities will receive funding from the first edition of “Cultura nei piccoli Comuni”(Culture in Small Municipalities), the public call for proposals launched by the Ministry of Culture to support projects that promote local heritage and strengthen the role of culture in communities. The list of selected municipalities has been published, identifying the winning municipalities—whether individual or network leaders—which collectively involve forty municipalities. The total funding allocated for this first edition amounts to 1,445,100 euros.
The initiative, launched last June, is promoted by the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity, within the Department of Cultural Activities of the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Task Force for Cultural Cooperation with Africa and the Broader Mediterranean Region and the Olivetti Plan for Culture. Administrative support is provided by ALES – Arte Lavoro e Servizi S.p.A.
Culture in Small Municipalities: 1,060 Applications from Across Italy
Aimed at municipalities with fewer than 25,000 residents, the call for proposals was created to support cultural initiatives capable of generating social value, strengthening local identities, and expanding opportunities for citizen participation. The high number of applications received— 1,060 from across the country—demonstrates local governments’ interest in support mechanisms that recognize culture as a strategic resource for social cohesion, innovation, and sustainable development. By funding projects tailored to the specific characteristics of individual regions, the initiative also aims to encourage new forms of cultural production and to strengthen collaboration between public administrations, third-sector organizations, associations, and local groups.
The 27 winning municipalities of the “Culture in Small Municipalities” call for proposals
The ranking for the first edition includes 27 beneficiaries, selected either individually or as leaders of a local network. In order of ranking, Bagaladi, in the province of Reggio Calabria, takes first place, followed by Seui, in the province of Nuoro, and Caccamo, in the province of Palermo. Next are San Giorgio Albanese (Cosenza), Mongiana (Vibo Valentia), Fabbriche di Vergemoli (Lucca), Campoli Appennino (Frosinone), Curti (Caserta), Prepotto (Udine), and Capua (Caserta).
The list continues with Costanzana (Vercelli), Flumeri (Avellino), Orani (Nuoro), San Giovanni a Piro (Salerno), Amelia (Terni), Amendolara (Cosenza), Borgorose (Rieti), Capoterra (Cagliari), and Castrignano de’ Greci (Lecce). Rounding out the list are Montemurro (Potenza), Sarsina (Forlì-Cesena), Sedilo (Oristano), Sustinente (Mantua), Trebisacce (Cosenza), Canale Monterano (Rome), Ploaghe (Sassari), and Sala Consilina (Salerno).
The proposals approved for funding address various areas, ranging from the preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage to urban and regional regeneration, as well as the promotion of contemporary creativity and the improvement of accessibility and cultural engagement. Among the objectives is the use of digital technologies to foster knowledge, participation, and inclusion. What unites these projects is the desire to create sustainable development opportunities, thereby strengthening culture’s contribution to the social and economic growth of communities.
The Evaluation Committee reviewed the applications, paying particular attention to the quality of the proposals, the effectiveness of the partnerships, and the sustainability of the initiatives in the medium and long term.
With the publication of the ranking list, the implementation phase of the selected projects now begins, aiming to consolidate local networks and produce lasting results even beyond the funding period. The goal is to strengthen the cultural fabric of small towns and support communities’ ability to develop shared initiatives, transforming culture into a concrete tool for growth and participation.
Plans are already looking ahead: the second edition of the “Culture in Small Municipalities” call for proposals is scheduled to be published by the end of 2026, designed to support initiatives and activities to be carried out during the summer of 2027.
