Pistoia, 30 meters of medieval walls collapse. Their degradation had long been known

A 30-meter-long section of medieval walls collapsed in Pistoia. Their deterioration had been known for some time.

A significant portion of the city’s medieval walls collapsed in Pistoia: 30 meters (100 feet) in the eastern section, the one that runs along Viale Arcadia. The collapse, which occurred on Sunday, occurred due to causes that remain to be clarified. No people were involved: firefighters had intervened with canine units to avert the risk that someone might have been trapped in the rubble of the walls, and found that fortunately no one was passing by at the time of the collapse. Now, the Superintendence of Florence, Prato and Pistoia has endorsed urgent action to secure the stretch of wall.

For many people familiar with Pistoia, this is something of an announced collapse, because the deterioration of much of the city walls (particularly in the section along Viale Arcadia) was well known. Public Works Councillor Alessio Bartolomei recalled how the Municipality of Pistoia, for three consecutive years (from 2016 to 2018), had participated in calls for funding to carry out safety works: in fact, the Municipality did not have adequate resources, although it was willing to co-finance the interventions. Resources, however, never arrived, and the outcome is now there for all to see.
