Rome, the Cloud becomes a home environment for Dimitris Papaioannou's video-performance installation

From April 14-16, the Rome Cloud will be transformed into a domestic environment for the video-performance installation "Inside" by Greek director and visual artist Dimitri Papaioannou. A sensory experience in which space and time are altered according to the viewer's perception.

From April 14 to 16, 2024, at the Nuvola in Rome, on the occasion of the EUR Culture per Roma festival of performances EUR SpA and Teatro dell’Opera di Roma bring in co-production Inside, the video-performance installation conceived and directed by Greek director and visual artist Dimitris Papaioannou. The artist constructs a space halfway between theater and exhibition space, in which time expands and contracts, marking the rhythms of daily life in the repetitive gestures of contemporary urban living.

Transformed into a domestic environment for the video-performance, the large exhibition space of the Cloud integrates with the scene, making the viewer part of the installation, on the border between reality and artistic representation, between introspection and voyeurism, between the poeticity of a repetitive gesture and the transience of human existence. Inside intends to be a sensory experience without a beginning and an end, in which space and time are both dilated or contracted depending on the perception and perspective of the viewer of the action. During the six-hour duration, viewers are in fact free to look as much as they want at the scene and move freely to observe it from different points of view, sit, leave or re-enter.

First staged in 2011 at the Pallas Theater in Athens, Inside is now offered as a video installation for theater and performance spaces and directed by Dimitris Papaioannou himself. The first Greek artist to receive the European Theater Prize (2017), Papaioannou has been nominated twice for the Emmy Award (2016) and twice for the Olivier Award (2019; 2022). His most recent creations have reached four continents, in more than 30 countries and 51 cities. He also curated the opening ceremony of the Athens Olympic Games in 2004.

The subject of this installation becomes the gestures of the artists, who in the scene sit, go to the bathroom, undress, shower, dry off, eat, look out onto the balcony and lose themselves in the landscape, lie down, and wrap themselves in a sheet. The installation will take place at different time slots: on April 14 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., on April 15 from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., and on April 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On April 14 at 5 p.m., at the end of the installation, Dimitris Papaioannou will be engaged in a talk at the Cloud.
