New tour of the monumental complex of Spoleto Cathedral with two views--from above.

As of April 1, the Art of the Spirit - Spirit of Art project started in Spoleto, which will last until November 3, 2019: it is the tour route that makes it possible once again to visit the entire Monumental Complex of the Cathedral of Spoleto, which includes the Cathedral, the Diocesan Museum and the Basilica of St. Euphemia, and which is enriched with two new “visions”... from above. Thus, visitors will be able on the one hand to admire from above the celebrated cycle of frescoes that one of the great masters of the Renaissance, Filippo Lippi (Florence, 1406 - Spoleto, 1469), created in the apse of the cathedral (these are the Stories of the Virgin, the Florentine painter’s last effort, created between 1466 and 1469), and on the other hand they will be able to climb to the top of the bell tower.

In the tour that includes the frescoes from above, it will be possible to better observe the fresco of the basin with theCoronation of the Virgin, having the opportunity to look closely at both God the Father and Mary, who thus turn out to be imposing figures, and the people of Paradise, distinguishing the figures of the Prophets and heroines of the biblical world. The aim is to create a unified path between the various sites that connect to the Cathedral, in which the protagonist is the light that accompanies the visitor, also with the help of a multilingual video guide, already outside the church, in a perspective cone descending toward the facade. The light that generates other light is found inside the wide nave until therefore the vision of the apsidal basin and the reaching of the top of the bell tower.

The itinerary for visiting the Monumental Complex begins from the right side of the church, from the Chapel of Eroli, bishops of Spoleto, dedicated to the Assumption with frescoes by Jacopo Siculo depicting prophets and scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The visitor will be ideally welcomed by the Assumption Madonna venerated by Bishop Eroli. In addition to the visit to the Cathedral, it will be possible to continue the journey to the Diocesan Museum and the Basilica of St. Euphemia, which until next May 20 is hosting an exhibition on the Madonna Bianca in Ancarano di Norcia, to which the first event of the exhibition review A church that is told. Earthquake-affected churches “reborn” in the Basilica of St. Euphemia. Here the Madonna Bianca in Ancarano di Norcia helps the public learn about its century-old history through the work that gave it its name: the large relief representing the Madonna and Child (called the “Madonna Bianc ”a because it is carved in snow-white marble), created in the late 15th century by Florentine sculptor Francesco di Simone Ferrucci (Fiesole, 1437 - Florence, 1493) and just restored thanks to the interest of Tecno Service of Terni. The work, kept inside the precious wooden tabernacle from 1511, is located in the chancel of St. Euphemia.

The Art of the Spirit - Spirit of Art route is open daily: Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Individual monuments observe other hours: the Basilica of St. Euphemia and the Diocesan Museum daily from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 to 5 p.m., the Cathedral Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday and holidays from 12:30 to 6 p.m. The ticket for the entire tour costs 9 euros with free audio guide, 8 euros for Spoleto Card holders, 5 euros the reduced for children aged 7 to 12, free for children under six and disabled with accompanying person.
