Venice, the waters of the lagoon become a... floating cinema, for the second year

For the second year in a row, the shoal behind Giudecca Island in the Venice Lagoon is hosting a floating cinema on the water.

From August 20 to September 4, 2021, for the second year in a row, the Venice lagoon will once again be a... cinema on water. Over 12 evenings, in fact, the appointment with Cinema Galleggiante - Acque Sconosciute (Floating Cinema - Unknown Waters) is renewed, an open-air film festival that takes place completely on the waters of the Venice lagoon, a collective action in which various local and international cultural realities participate. It is a project by Edoardo Aruta and Paolo Rosso presented by Microclima, in collaboration with Ocean Space - TBA21-Academy, Pentagram Stiftung, Palazzo Grassi - Punta della Dogana - Pinault Collection and with Fondazione In Between Art Film and Lamyland - Owenscorp. The event will feature a series of screenings, performances and interventions taking place on a floating platform placed in the middle of the lagoon, in the shoal behind the island of Giudecca at the Rio de Sant’Eufemia. Viewers will be able to watch the programming either from their own boats or from a barge designed to accommodate the audience without a boat in compliance with current spacing regulations.

Floating Cinema - Unknown Waters was born from the need to develop cultural activities and aggregation through new forms of dialogue and participation. In this process of imagination, Venice, a city emblematic of the complex relationship of interaction between man and the environment, serves as a catalyst for local experiments that can be reflected on a global level. The second edition of the festival will have as its theme travel, understood both as an exploration of lands, abysses, space and time, and as a relationship between cultures, a way of access and confrontation with the other. According to the organizers of the initiative, Venice, which has always been a crossroads of stories and knowledge, a place of arrivals and departures but also a city challenged by tourist overcrowding, lends itself to host a reflection on new forms of mobility and cohabitation. It is therefore under the banner of instability, the unexpected, resistance, technology and water as an element capable of creating new ways of access and communication, in relation to travel understood as physical, emotional and imaginary movement, that the heart of the film festival Acque Sconosciute is aimed at.

In addition to the collaboration with the five partner institutions, Floating Cinema - Unknown Waters relies on the support of numerous institutions called upon to supplement the programming with a selection of content. The entities renewing their participation for the 2021 edition are: About, ALMA ZEVI, Awai, Casa Capra, Peggy Guggenheim Collection, DH Office, Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Museo Fortuny - Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, Galleria Michela Rizzo, Università Iuav di Venezia, Spazio Punch.
