The 18th edition of the Biennale Donna opened today, for the first time in the spaces of Ferrara's Palazzina Marfisa d'Este. It was awarded the Mattarella medal

It opened in Ferrara, for the first time in the Palazzina Marfisa d’Este, the Women’s Biennial, now in its 18th edition, also obtaining the medal of the Presidency of the Republic. An edition dedicated to the great female photographers of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s: Paola Agosti, Diane Arbus, Letizia Battaglia, Giovanna Borgese, Lisetta Carmi, Carla Cerati, Françoise Demulder, Mari Mahr, Lori Sammartino, Chiara Samugheo, Leena Saraste, Francesca Woodman and Petra Wunderlich. Thirteen Italian and international women photographers whose images document reportage, social battles, and shots from the front that marked epochs.

“With this exhibition we come to five exhibitions open in the city,” stressed Councillor Marco Gulinelli. “The photographic expression that comes through female sensibility is extraordinary [...] Photography will increasingly be a foundational and guiding element that we want to promote.”
“For me, photography is the discovery of a different look, as well as an exciting experience,” stressed the curator, Angela Madesani.

The initiative is by the UDI Women’s Biennial Committee, with the collaboration of the Art Museums Service of the City of Ferrara, the Ferrara Arte Foundation, the support of the Emilia-Romagna Region and the patronage of the Ministry of Culture, Art and Tourism.
