Necropolis dating back to the early Iron Age discovered in Atri (Teramo).

During work on the new methane pipeline, a necropolis dating back to the Early Iron Age was discovered in the territory of Atri (Teramo).

During the works for the construction of the new methane pipeline “Cellino Attanasio-Pineto,” in the territory of Atri (Teramo), in the Casoli-contrada Casabianca locality, an important archaeological discovery has emerged. The monitoring activities, carried out by the company ArcheoLab on behalf of Sgi Spa, have in fact led to the identification of a necropolis dating back to the early Iron Age, hitherto unknown in this area.

The investigations, which began a few months ago and were conducted under the scientific supervision of the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the provinces of L’Aquila and Teramo, have so far returned 10 inhumation burials. Based on the grave goods found, they can be dated between 850 and 750 BC. In some cases, traces of the covering mounds, consisting of river pebbles and ranging in size from 7 to 15 meters, have been preserved: a typical funerary practice in protohistoric Abruzzo. The tombs belong to both adults and very young children, significant evidence of social recognition extended to the entire community, regardless of age.

The discovery, which occurred at the same time as a construction site, was made possible thanks to archaeological surveillance. In addition, the Italian Gas Pipeline Company adopted technical solutions that made it possible to protect the area and, at the same time, to carry out the work on the construction of the methane pipeline without interruption.

“The discovery of this necropolis represents a find of great interest, which significantly enriches the historical knowledge of our territory, said Superintendent Cristina Collettini. ”These ancient testimonies, which emerged almost by chance, remind us how much the memory of the past is still alive and present in the subsoil we tread every day. Every tomb, every object unearthed is a silent trace of lives lived, which today we can return to collective history thanks to the joint work between institutions, archaeologists and businesses."
