Gems created with the sound of the voice: the project of two vocal experimenters

Two voice experimenters started the Voice Gems project: by collecting hundreds of voices from around the world, they are able to create one-of-a-kind gems, both digital and real.

Can voice generate gems? That is what Harry Yeff, stage name Reps100, and Trung Bao set out to prove with their Voice Gems project. The two are known as vocal experimenters and as artists they have collected hundreds of voices from around the world, of great range, with the goal of taking the human voice to its most unknown limits. The project aims to highlight the most extraordinary voices by bringing to life digital g ems and real physical sculptures, and to create a great archive of voices.

Voice data and recordings create both the texture and colors of the gemstones, one-of-a-kind pieces in real time. The works exist as NFTs, 3D prints, digital videos, projections, and cast sculptures.

The first digital sculpture was created in 2019 from the voices of a couple, and the resulting work became a marriage proposal gift instead of the traditional brilliant. All gems created are recorded and numbered in an archive.

In 2021 the project was presented at Art Basel, the König Galerie in Berlin, the Francisco Carolinum Museum in Linz, and eight gems will be exhibited at the upcoming World Economic Forum. In addition, the two voice experimenters recently launched the Voice Gems meta-museum as a space to present the creations made so far. Although so far each gem has to do with the human dimension, it is not ruled out that the project may also involve voices generated by artificial intelligence or animal sounds, such as endangered species.
