Johnny Depp will return behind the camera for a biopic on Amedeo Modigliani

After twenty-five years Johnny Depp is returning behind the camera for a biopic inspired by the life of Amedeo Modigliani. According to a preview, the painter will be played by Riccardo Scamarcio.

It had already been announced last summer but now comes official confirmation: twenty-five years after his first film as a director, Johnny Depp is returning behind the camera for a biopic inspired by the life of Amedeo Modiglianiand, according to a Deadline preview, Riccardo Scamarcio will play the famous artist.

The cast will include Al Pacino and also Cesar Award winner Pierre Niney. Shooting will begin in Budapest this fall, and the project will seek partners at the Cannes Marché.

The fim, based on a play by Dennis McIntyre and adapted for the big screen by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski, will tell the story of Modigliani during his stay in Paris in 1916. In the foreground will be the life of the Leghorn artist through forty-eight turbulent and eventful hours that see him on the run from the police through the streets and bars of war-torn Paris. His desire to prematurely end his career and leave town will be rebuffed by fellow bohemians: the French artist Maurice Utrillo (played by Niney), the Belarusian Chaim Soutine, and his English muse and lover, Beatrice Hastings. Modigliani will seek advice from art dealer and friend Leopold Zborowski, but will be confronted by international art collector Gangnat (played by Al Pacino) who could change his life.
