Matteo Garrone ’sIo Capitano is officially among the five films nominated for the2024 Oscar for Best International Film. Competing in the same category are Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days (Japan), Juan Antonio Bayona’s The Snow Company (Spain), İlker Çatak’s The Teachers’ Lounge (Germany), and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest (UK).
Produced by Archimede with Rai Cinema and Tarantula, with Pathé, Logical Content Ventures with the support of DGCA- MiC, with the participation of Canal+, Ciné+ in co-production with RTBF (Belgian Television), Voo-Be TV and Proximus, the film Io Capitano has already won the Leoncino d’Oro Award at the 80th Venice Film Festival. The cast includes Seydou Sarr(Marcello Mastroianni Award), Moustapha Fall, Ibrahima Gueye. And for Io capitano Matteo Garrone was awarded the Silver Lion for Best Director.
The film recounts the contemporary Odyssey of two young boys who face a terrible and adventurous journey through the pitfalls of the desert, the horrors of detention centers in Libya and the dangers of the sea to reach Europe, the destination of their dreams.
