Recanati celebrates the bicentennial of Leopardi's Infinity

Recanati celebrates the bicentennial of Leopardi's Inifinito with exhibitions, events and dates.

A continuous stream of unmissable events and appointments and the extraordinary exhibition at Villa Colloredo Mels of the Viscano manuscript of The Infinite 200 years after its composition. This is how Recanati is preparing to celebrate the bicentenary since the writing of one of the most famous compositions in the history of poetry signed by Giacomo Leopardi.

Infinito Leopardi is a project promoted by the National Committee for the bicentenary celebrations of Giacomo Leopardi’s The Infinite, established by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities (MIBAC), with the participation of the Marche Region, the Municipality of Recanati, the National Center for Leopardi Studies, Casa Leopardi, the World Center for Poetry and Culture and the University of Macerata. The programming is part of the unified Strategic Plan for Culture put in place by the Marche Region to make the most of the local cultural heritage, which identifies 2019 as the year of Giacomo Leopardi by supporting related events.

It is a complex project both in terms of the different themes covered and the time span, an extraordinarily unique fact around which to create a year-long event that between exhibitions, performances, conferences, publications, can urge the need to go back to thinking about infinity and the infinite expressions of man in nature, a leading and very modern theme of Leopardi’s thought.

The time span of the entire year dedicated to theInfinite will be marked in two main moments, corresponding to the creation of different kinds of exhibitions produced by Sistema Museo, the company that manages Recanati’s civic museums. The first part of the celebrations, from December 21, 2018 until May 19, 2019, will see the creation of two exhibition sections. The first, curated by Laura Melosi, director of the Leopardi Chair at the University of Macerata, entitled Infinity/Immensity. The Manuscript, will see the rediscovery of the Leopardian heritage of manuscripts owned by the Municipality of Visso, through the careful reinterpretation of them and their extraordinary exhibition at Villa Colloredo Mels together with the autograph of L’Infinito, the symbolic heart of the project. Multimedia tools will accompany their viewing, understanding and allow the in-depth study of the history that led him to us. An operation that will make it possible to set up a rotating exhibition model in the rooms of the civic museum of the Leopard corpus of documents, manuscripts and memorabilia of the poet, belonging to the collection of the City of Recanati. A path undertaken in December 2017 through a journey through the halls of Villa Colloredo Mels to rediscover the Leopard heritage that returns permanently, after many years, available to all citizens, tourists and scholars.

With Mario Giacomelli. Giacomo Leopardi, The Infinite, A Silvia, curated by Alessandro Giampaoli and Marco Andreani, the photographic sequence at the center of one of the most fascinating and least investigated chapters in the history of postwar Italian photography and the relationship between literature and photography is brought to the exhibition. On display will be A Silvia, the famous photo-story inspired by Leopardi’s poem of the same name, in its original ’64 version, traces of which had been lost until now, and in that of 1988, along with the series of L’Infinito to give the public a way to compare and get a glimpse of Giacomelli’s extraordinary stylistic evolution over the years.

The celebrations continue from June 30 to November 3, 2019 (opening scheduled for June 29, the day on which the Recanatese poet’s birthday falls), with two exhibitions revolving around the expression of infinity in art, Infiniti curated by Emanuela Angiuli and Finito, Non Finito, Infinito curated by Marcello Smarrelli, for a sensational journey from the Romantic era to the present.

Punctuated through the staging of the scheduled exhibitions, the celebrations will be accompanied by collateral events curated by leading experts from the Italian and international cultural scene with a special focus on the younger generation.
