Villa d'Este, the garden of wonders reopens paying homage to Calvin's masterpieces

Villa d'Este offers an authentic experience through its garden of wonders, paying homage to Italo Calvino's most famous masterpieces.

Delizie Estensi is Villa d’Este ’s new project for its garden of wonders, linked to the multicolored hues of its botanical species and their seasonality. A project founded on the universal values of beauty, sustainability and care for nature. The initiative is proposed as an authentic and ever-new experience in the eyes of visitors through the garden of the Villa d’Este.

Thanks to intense redevelopment, recovery and restoration work, the Melangoli Garden has been reopened to the public since March 25: a cozy and intimate green area, close to the Organ Fountain, which until now has been inaccessible. It is a garden within a garden, which will cyclically display selected floral collections and ancient botanical essences. Protagonists of the first event were bulbous plants, with more than 10,000 specimens present throughout the villa and a thousand blooms at the Melangoli Garden alone.

“As with the Estense gardens sung about by Ariosto,” commented VILLAE director Andrea Bruciati, "this project re-proposes the wonder of the Villa’s ’artificial nature,’ a ’marvel’ now renewed by the sensations stimulated by an iridescent ecosystem, forged here by seasonal blooms that follow one another within a reclaimed space that has been dormant for more than 50 years. And in reframing Ariosto’s fantastic and fabulous horizon is this year’s tribute to Italo Calvino, who drew from lightness and failed utopia to contemporary man his own reflection. As a tribute to his chivalric trilogy, Our Ancestors, three different interventions, aimed at the enhancement of areas of the garden misunderstood by most, now all to be rediscovered, will be configured from today as episodes of a new narrative inspired by Calvino’s titles, The Cloven Viscount, The Rampant Baron and The Inexistent Knight."

This will be followed by Il visconte dimezzato, a riot of nuances at the Cardinal’s Rose Garden, which has been recovered and restored with old varieties, while a temporary display of rare and collectible roses will be featured at the Melangoli Garden.

The Rampant Baron will accompany the entire summer at the villa. The water garden installed in the Fishponds, with its variety of aquatic plants, irises and water lilies, will substantiate an imaginative experience of an immersive experience.

The nonexistent knight will conclude the initiative, with the installation of fruit trees and seasonal varieties at the Grand Avenue and the celebration of Christmas at the Villa with the large Gift Tree at the Cloisters, a solidarity event to collect gifts and treats for the children of the Tivoli Children’s Ward.
