Women's Photography Biennial returns to Mantua, with many exhibitions and events

From March 3 to 27, 2022, the Biennale of Women's Photography, in its second edition, returns to Mantua. This year's theme is Legacy, inheritance, legacy.

From March 3, 2022, the Biennale della Fotografia Femminile (Biennial of Women’s Photography) returns, an event now in its second edition that will be held in Mantua until March 27, 2022, and will bring to the city, in historic and private venues, fifteen exhibitions by Italian and international female photographers and another nine exhibitions by female photographers selected through an open call.

Conceived by theassociation La Papessa, with the artistic direction of Alessia Locatelli, the 2022 edition has Legacy as its theme, a term that can be translated into Italian as "eredità,""legacy." From family intimacy, from our DNA, to today’s debate on environmental legacy, passing through architectural and cultural heritage, to reflect on the theme of legacy: what have previous generations left us, and what will we do with it as a result? It is intended to analyze the process of change as a reaction produced by collective legacies. We are not where we are (only) because of choices external to us, but the world is structured in its contingent complexity by the intersection of arbitrary and desired choices made by people. The present and the future are the offspring of the past. And today’s choice lays the foundation for our tomorrow.

The exhibitions are set up in various locations in the Lombard city, from the House of Rigoletto to the House of Mantegna, from the Drawing Gallery to the Former Church of Our Lady of Victory, and among the photographers featured in the exhibitions will be Tami Aftab, Sarah Blesener, Betty Colombo, Delphine Diallo, Ilvy Njiokiktjien, Esther Ruth Mbabazi, Flavia Rossi, and Daniella Zalcman. The artists selected instead through open call are Maria Grazia Carriero, Chiara Cunzolo, Giulia Hrvatin, Chiara Innocenti, Sarah Mei Herman, Barbara Pau, Luiza Possamai Kons, Anita Pouchard Serra, Francesca Tilio.

Talks, portfolio readings and workshops are also planned.
